Airflow is behind more heating complaints than people expect
A gas furnace produces heat in the burner section, but a duct system has to move that heat where you live. When airflow is restricted, the furnace heats the air too much, trips its high-limit switch, shuts the burners off, and runs the blower to cool down. You feel that as short bursts of heat, lukewarm air at registers, and a house that never catches up.

Temperature rise: a number that tells a story
Every furnace has a temperature-rise range on its data plate — often something like 35–65°F. That is the intended difference between return air and supply air. Measuring outside that range points directly at a problem. Too low usually means burners are underfiring or the blower is moving too much air. Too high usually means restricted airflow, a dirty filter, or blocked ducts, and it shortens heat exchanger life.
A note on repeat repairs
If the same furnace has needed three separate repairs in two heating seasons, the individual repairs may each be reasonable while the overall spend is not. That is worth a straightforward repair-versus-replacement conversation rather than another part.
