Thermostat location matters in older homes
Many Buffalo homes have thermostats mounted where they made sense in 1950 — on an exterior wall, in a hallway near the front door, or above a radiator location that no longer exists. On a windy winter day, cold air infiltrating behind the wall plate of an exterior-wall thermostat makes it read low, so the furnace runs long and overheats the rest of the house. Sealing behind the thermostat, or relocating it to an interior wall at roughly five feet, often solves comfort complaints that no amount of furnace work would.
Smart thermostats and older furnaces
Smart thermostats generally work well with standard single-stage gas furnaces, but they need reliable power.
