Higher is not automatically better. A MERV 13 one-inch filter in a system designed for MERV 8 can raise static pressure enough to cause limit trips, short cycling, and premature blower wear. If you want high filtration, the right answer is usually a thicker four- or five-inch media cabinet with far more surface area, not a denser one-inch filter.

Getting the size and direction right
- Read the size printed on the frame of the old filter, or on the filter slot cover.
- Nominal size (16x25x1) differs slightly from actual size — buy by the nominal number printed on the frame.
- The airflow arrow points toward the furnace, in the direction air travels.
- A filter that is loose in its slot lets air bypass it entirely; get the right size rather than the closest one.
- Reseat the filter slot cover and the blower door fully — an open door switch stops the furnace.
- Write the date on the filter frame so you are not guessing next time.

Why filters matter more in a Buffalo winter
During a long heating season, the system moves an enormous volume of air, and homes are closed up for months. Basement installations pull in laundry lint, pet hair, and general basement dust. A filter that would last three months in a mild climate loads faster here simply because of run hours.
