Venting decisions in Western New York
Condensing furnaces vent through PVC out a sidewall. Where that termination goes matters here more than in most climates: too low and lake-effect drifts bury it, too close to a walkway and exhaust plume becomes a nuisance, too close to the intake and the furnace recirculates its own exhaust. Height above expected snow line, separation between intake and exhaust, and clearance from windows and doors are all part of a considered installation, not an afterthought.
If you are moving from an 80% furnace that vented into a masonry chimney to a condensing furnace on PVC, the chimney's remaining load — usually a natural-draft water heater — has to be reassessed. An oversized, now-cool chimney can cause draft problems and condensation. This is a routine part of the project when it is planned for.

Gas and power isolated, old furnace disconnected and removed, existing venting evaluated or removed.

New furnace set level on a proper base, plenums and transitions fabricated, venting and combustion air piped, condensate trapped and drained, gas and electrical connected.

Commission and verify
Gas pressure set, temperature rise and static pressure measured, safety controls tested, thermostat configured, and full heat cycles observed.
Questions worth asking any installer
- Did you perform a heat-loss calculation, and can I see the result?
- What size is the new furnace and why is it different from (or the same as) the old one?
- How will it be vented, and where will the terminations be relative to snow line?
- Is my return air adequate for this blower, and how did you determine that?
- Will you measure and record temperature rise and gas pressure at startup?
- What happens to my water heater venting if the furnace moves off the chimney?
- What is covered under the manufacturer's parts warranty and what registration is required?
Commissioning numbers should be written down
Ask for the measured temperature rise, manifold gas pressure, and static pressure at the end of the job. Those numbers document that the system was set up correctly and give any future technician a baseline to compare against.
